The Festival of the Whales & Dolphins aka Festival de Ballenas y Delfines Costa Rica in Uvita Costa Rica, is a wonderful opportunity to see Humpback Whales up close in their natural habitat. It is also a great chance to learn about the whales, nature and all the creatures that inhabit the southern Pacific area of Costa Rica. The Festival runs for 3 days, this year September 1st 2nd and 3rd, and there are discounts on Whale Tours and many fun events in and around the Bahia area. In Uvita/Bahia there are two different Humpback Whale watching seasons. From mid July to to mid November and from mid December to April. It is thought that the highest concentrations of Whales occurs in September and October. The Humpback Whale of the North visits the South Pacific Coast from December to March and the humpback whale of the South begins migration in July which ends in October. Some Whales travel as far as 5,000 miles to get to Costa Rica and since the two different whale seasons there you can see Whales from the North Pacific (Alaska and Hawaii etc) The Northern migrating Whales can be seen from December to April, while the Humpbacks from the South ( Arctic zone) are in Costa Rica July to November. Uvita is on the Costa Bellena, which translates to The Whale Coast, so if you are looking for whales the Uvita Bahia area, you have come to the right place. Whale Watching tours are popular here because of the great chance of seeing whales.
Marino Ballena National Park constitutes the first Costa Rican protected wilderness area created exclusively for its marine resources. In addition, it represents the first marine park in Central America , and is in the eighth position as the best place for whale watching in the world, according to National Geographic. Marino Ballena National Park has an extension of 5,160 marine hectares and 171 land hectares with a 15 km long coastal strip that goes from the mouth of the Morete River to Punta Piñuela. The park has 4 official entry sectors one of which is currently closed due to construction (as of August 2022) The South Pacific of Costa Rica has a very humid tropical jungle, with a dry season that goes from mid-December to mid-April, with sporadic rains, and a rainy season from mid-April to mid-December. In terms of vegetation, the most important forest patches are in Punta Ballena and Punta Piñuela, you can find Ojoche trees, Cedro María, Chicosapote and Lagartillo. The mangrove swamp, in Estero Negro and surroundings, is formed by red mangrove, button, salt stick. With regard to fauna, in addition to the humpback whale, you can find species such as the spotted dolphin, the bottlenose dolphin, the manta ray, the hammerhead shark, the parrot fish and the mackerel. Isla Ballena is also an important nesting site for the white ibis; Other species of birds found in the park are the earwig and the cinnamon-colored booby. My name is Ed and I sold my house, quit my job as a Rich Media Editor with Gracenote back in the USA and moved to Uvita Costa Rica in April of 2021, in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic. Moving to a new country by yourself can be an intimidating endeavor, but with the right mindset and a little luck, life has been very good for me here. I love the weather here, the nature is absolutely amazing, the beaches and the mountains are fantastic, I even have monkeys in my back yard. Costa Rica Story does an informal livestream on Thursdays, be sure to check that out. The Costa Rica Story web site https://www.costaricastory.com/
